Frequently Asked Questions
- Q...How long does it take to make one?
A...I usually get lost, timewise, pretty soon after
starting one of these. My closest estimate is around 200 plus
hours.
- Q...What are they made of?
A....Regular guitar woods: Mahongany, catulpa,
alder, ash, poplar, maple, Sasafrass, and walnut are the woods I've
used.
- Q...Where do you get the necks?
A...Mostly from catalogs: Stewart-Macdonald;
Warmouth, and Carvin. I've made the necks for several of them (Mona & Big
Chief, my first fist guitar, Aries, and Taurus)
- Q...What do you paint them with?
A...My favorite is artist's oil paint--it feels and
works the best and looks the best. It has a slow drying time, but
since I'm only putting on thin glazes, that's not really much of a
problem. I also sometimes use acrylic artist's paint, alcohol analyn
dyes, and I've even used watercolor or tints-all and varnish.
- Q...What do you use for finish?
A...Spray lacquer from a can, brushing lacquer, or
polyurethane. I don't have a real spray set-up. Finishing is bad on
the nerves.
- Q...Do you do any real art?
A...See the non-guitar art sub-page--click on the link at the bottom of the page for some sculpture very much in the same vein as the guitars. I've also done photo work from time to time.
